August Feature—Michael Yost
Michael Yost is a poet and essayist whose work has appeared in First Things, Modern Age, The University Bookman, Dappled Things, New Lyre, Hearth & Field, and The Brazen Head. He is the Managing Editor and co-founder of The Colosseum, a journal of poetry, criticism, and fiction. A graduate of the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts and the University of St. Thomas (Houston), he serves as Director of Admissions at the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts and lives in New Hampshire with his wife and children.

Enjoy this artist statement from Michael Yost to contextualize his feature poem:
“Ecco Homo” is an ekphrastic poem that emerged from my time in Italy: in particular the months I spent living in Rome during the spring of 2016. I have no wish to explain the poem, but there is something to be gained if the reader is attentive to the fact that final two stanzas discuss Michaelangelo’s statue of Christ the Redeemer, which stands in the Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, a church built over the ruins of a temple thought to be dedicated to the goddess Minerva, now known to be dedicated to Isis. This poem in particular is indebted to Kenneth Clarke’s The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form. It would be hubristic to think that someone would read that book simply to understand this poem; the book is well worth reading in itself.
